Dr. Borgen is a professor and Head of the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education at the University of British Columbia, in Vancouver, Canada. He is a counselling psychologist whose work focuses on career/life transitions and career development. Programs for young people and adults based on his research have been adopted for use across Canada and in several other countries.
Dr. Borgen was the President of the International Association for Counselling from 1998 - 2006. IAC is an international Non-Governmental Organization that has consultative status with several United Nations agencies. He is involved with UNESCO in ongoing projects related to career focused counsellor education and the development of guidance and counselling services.
Publications or Key Achievements
Dr. Borgen’s research and programs in the area of life transitions and career development have been translated and adapted for use in Bhutan, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, and Sweden. In 2005 Dr. Borgen was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Umea in Sweden for his leadership in the development of counsellor education in Sweden. He is an honorary life member of the International Association for Counselling and the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. In 2011 he received the Stu Conger Award for leadership in career development in Canada. Selected recent publications include:
